What is a tapestry?

Tapestries are textiles traditionally mounted on walls. They have been produced for as long as the craft of weaving has existed and are considered antique if woven over 100 years ago. Greeks and Romans, as well as nobles in Egypt and the Near East, enjoyed ornamental tapestries in their dwellings. Weavers created this textile art through needlepoint skills and richly colored dyes. Patrons often commissioned tapestries depicting iconic images like hunting scenes, as well as religious symbols, and treasured them for a lifetime since the pieces are durable and easily transportable. Antique tapestries were made in a range of sizes and styles, typically from materials available to artisans at the time of weaving—usually wool, silk, and linen.

Tapestry wall-hangings were particularly popular during the Victorian age (18th century & 19th century), with antique French, Italian, and Belgian handwoven tapestries among  the most common. Long-considered the epitome of wall art,  hung and framed tapestries are still renowned for their ability to create stunning and timeless decor.
